Seattle often pioneers progressive victories, but without a statewide strategy our power remains limited. When Tacoma voters passed the historic Tenant Bill of Rights in 2023, our movement leveraged that win–alongside Seattle tenant’s victories–to pass statewide rent stabilization. Measure 1, Safe Homes for All, on Tacoma’s ballot this November will build on that victory, ensuring rights on paper are actually enforced, that lawbreaking slumlords are held accountable, and that Tacoma’s growing tenant union movement has the leverage it needs to win.
That’s why the corporate landlord lobby is pouring massive resources into defeating ballot measure #1, Safe Homes For All. Seattle’s multi-billion-dollar Goodman Real Estate empire, owned by a Trump mega-donor, has dropped $175,000 into funding deceptive ads. In 2023, outside real estate interests shattered local records by spending nearly $400,000 in a failed effort to block Tacoma’s Tenant Bill of Rights, and they are building an even larger war chest this fall. But we can overcome their corporate propaganda again through solidarity and grassroots organizing, ensuring that we build progressive momentum across Washington!
